Test inspired by Tina Berning. Working on designs for a film version of Angela Carter’s Bloody Chamber. A kind of gothic horror story where a young girl is seduced by the glamour a suitor can offer her. He gives her all the keys to every safe and locked door in his house, forbidding her to use just one key. Of course she uses the key and discovers all three of his previous dead wives inside…

badly scanned final illustration for collaboration project with fashion and textiles. this is the costume i am currently making. all the long paneled skirts should hopefully slot up like a telescope revealing the character’s true identity and her deteriorating under layer. however its proving very technical. but im not giving up yet!
I was looking at ideas of restriction and suppression of true emotions and how they can can lead to mental break down (strong idea in a street car named desire) so the main body of the costume is very clinical, no identifiable features, and hospital gown-like ties at the back. She has been stripped of her identity and her individuality. The under layer has fungi like structures, where mould and plants have been growing on the fabric, a textile we developed through the collaboration, her naturalistic side emerging, revealed by strings attached to her arms which pull the layers up.
Pictures to come when i finish it. But if you attend the fashion show at ECA.. you’ll see it on the catwalk!
